Over the past few months there have been several new additions to the restaurant scene in Davao! It’s exciting to get new places to sample, and find new “stand by” places where we will return again and again. A couple of months ago, Feyma and I found a new stand by where we know we will be back! In fact, we haven’t just been there once, we have already gone back several times!
The place I am talking about is Murray’s New Orleans Restaurant. It is located at the new SM Premier Lanang mall.
I lived in Louisiana for about 10 years when I was a teenager and young adult, from the ages of 16 until I was in my mid-20’s, so a lot of this Cajun style, or New Orleans style food is really comfort food for me. When we first went to New Orleans Restaurant, I was a little worried that a New Orleans style restaurant so far away from New Orleans just would not live up to my expectations.
When we first entered the restaurant, I was impressed by the decor of the place. I actually felt like I was in New Orleans, somewhere in the French Quarter! It had a very lively, party like atmosphere. But, the food would be the real judge of things, as it should. So, we got a menu from the waiter and gave it a look. Hmm… the food on the menu had a very New Orleans sound to it, so we chose a few dishes to try:
- Caesar Salad (OK, not so much Louisiana, but it sounded good)
- Fried Spicy Chicken Skins
- Seafood Parade
Then, on subsequent visits we tried other dishes:
- Fiesta Nachos

When the first dish came out to the table, the Caesar Salad, it was good, and I enjoyed it, but since that is not a Louisiana dish, it didn’t really answer the question of whether the food was good or not. But, next we got the Fried Spicy Chicken skins and they were really great! The skins were soaked in buttermilk then fried with Cajun spices. Wow, they were great! I am not a huge fan of super-spicy food, but the spice level on these chicken skins was just right for me.
Next, when the Seafood Parade came out, Feyma and I were getting excited, because we are both real seafood lovers! The seafood parade consisted of a filet of Salmon, Steamed Clams, Oysters, Mussels, Calamari and Popcorn Shrimp. Let me look at each item individually.
The Salmon was OK, but nothing special. It was cooked very nicely, very moist and such, but both Feyma and I felt that it did not have much flavor. Perhaps this is because we lived in the Pacific Northwest of the USA for many years and that is where Salmon is KING, and we are used to some of the best salmon you can get. So, this salmon did not measure up. Personally, I would not order the salmon again. It was not terrible, but just didn’t have enough flavor.
I love clams, and these were among the best clams that I’ve ever had. The level of flavor was excellent, spices and such. Perfect! I could not ask for more! I could eat these clams all day long, every day of the week and would not tire of them!
These oysters were pretty good. Well, let me change that, the oysters themselves were great. But, they had a kind of mango based salsa on top, which I would have preferred to do without. Probably next time I would ask them to put the salsa on the side, or leave it off altogether, and enjoy the oysters themselves. Still passable, but not my favorite on the plate.
I can’t say anything at all bad about the mussels. They were great! Well, I just thought of one bad thing I could say, and that is that I wanted more of them! Ha ha… but seriously, I am a real mussel lover, and I got the flavor that I wanted!
I have had some bad squid before, and because of that, I have never been one to really eat calamari. But, the calamari on the platter looked so good that I had to give it a try, and I loved it. Feyma was probably disappointed, because she is a squid lover, and if I hadn’t tried it should would have gotten a lot more squid! 😉 Seriously, this was some good calamari! I’d go back and order it again in a heartbeat.
I am a real shrimp lover, and Louisiana has some of the best shrimp in the world! This shrimp lived up to my expectations too! It was really good. Based on the great taste of this popcorn shrimp, I want to have a Shrimp Po-Boy one of these times when I go back to New Orleans Restaurant!
So, overall, I would say that the seafood parade was excellent! A couple of items were less than excellent, but overall the platter as a whole was great, and I’d get it again, without a doubt.
Would I go back? Well, I already told you that, but let me reiterate… yes indeed. In fact, I brought my friends Neal and Linda there a few weeks later, and they enjoyed it. Well, actually, Feyma and I brought our friends there, but Neal and Linda paid for the meal, and I thank them for that. It was a great time to bond with friends, enjoy some great food and have fun with the great fellowship of friends!
Can’t wait to see you again, New Orleans Restaurant! Keep some seafood ready for me! 😉
